Welcome to Sacred Illusion

Sacred Illusion began with a fairly simple instinct: reality is stranger than we usually allow it to be.

This is a personal blog and an ongoing exploration of the questions I keep returning to. What is consciousness? Why do some places feel different from others? Why do certain ancient ideas keep reappearing in modern language? What should we make of synchronicities, extraordinary dreams, altered states and those occasional experiences that leave you wondering whether your understanding of reality is quite complete?

I don't have a grand theory that explains all of it. I'm not particularly interested in creating one.

What interests me is exploring the territory properly.

That means reading the history, looking at the science where science has something useful to say, taking spiritual traditions seriously on their own terms, listening to people's experiences and leaving room for possibilities that have not been neatly resolved.

Sacred Illusion is for fellow travellers who enjoy that territory too.

Not people looking for someone to tell them what to believe. People who enjoy standing at the edge of a question and looking over.

Join the exploration

If that sounds like your kind of place, you can join Sacred Illusion and receive new essays, explorations and occasional recommendations by email.

No daily noise. No endless funnel. Just new things worth thinking about as the site develops. It's all free and there will always be a free tier in what we do to encourage more travellers along the road.

Four ways into Sacred Illusion

The archive has grown considerably, so rather than leaving hundreds of articles in one enormous pile, Sacred Illusion is organised around four broad territories.

They overlap, because reality has not had the courtesy to organise itself into neat website categories. But each offers a different place to begin.

Reality & Consciousness

What if reality is not quite what it appears to be?

This is where we explore simulation theory, consciousness, synchronicity, dreams, déjà vu, altered states, apparent glitches and the strange experience of time.

Some of these subjects have strong scientific explanations. Others sit closer to philosophy or metaphysics. A few remain genuinely difficult to categorise.

The interesting territory is often where those explanations meet.

Sacred Earth

Why do some places seem to carry more than geography?

Sacred Earth explores the physical places humans have treated as significant for thousands of years: stone circles, springs, mountains, pilgrimage routes, temples, labyrinths and landscapes crossed by supposed ley lines and other invisible geographies.

Some stories are archaeological. Some are historical. Some belong to folklore, religion or modern spiritual practice.

And then there is the experience of actually standing there.

This section asks what makes a place sacred, why particular landscapes continue to attract people across centuries and whether our relationship with place is more complex than coordinates on a map.

Ancient Wisdom

Human beings were questioning reality long before we had laboratories, computers or neuroscience.

Ancient Wisdom explores the philosophies, texts and esoteric traditions through which earlier cultures tried to understand consciousness, divinity, death, knowledge and the structure of reality.

Here you'll find Gnosticism and the Demiurge, mystery schools and initiation, Vedic thought, Hermeticism and other traditions that have shaped the way people have imagined what lies beneath ordinary experience.

The aim is not to pretend ancient people secretly discovered quantum physics thousands of years early.

It is to take their ideas seriously enough to ask why some of their questions remain remarkably alive.

Manifestation & Practice

Eventually, all the big questions become personal.

What do you actually do with an interest in consciousness, spirituality and the possibility that your relationship with reality may be more participatory than it appears?

Manifestation & Practice is the experiential part of Sacred Illusion.

It includes meditation, intention, journalling, ritual, visualisation, manifestation, intuition and practices for working with identity and change.

Some of these practices have well-understood psychological mechanisms. Others come from spiritual traditions or modern metaphysical ideas. Rather than pretending those explanations are interchangeable, we explore what happens when you actually try the practice.

Curious without being credulous

There is one principle running through everything on Sacred Illusion.

Curiosity does not require certainty.

I don't think every coincidence is a message, every ancient monument was built by a lost civilisation or every unusual dream proves consciousness can leave the body.

I also don't think that asking difficult questions about those experiences makes someone foolish.

So throughout Sacred Illusion I try to distinguish between things that are historically documented, supported by scientific evidence, rooted in spiritual tradition, reported through personal experience or simply speculative.

Those categories matter.

But speculation has a place too.

Some of the most interesting questions begin with what if?

This is a living project

Sacred Illusion isn't intended to become a finished encyclopaedia of the unexplained.

It is an evolving personal study.

Articles change as I learn more. New connections appear. Some ideas become more convincing and others less so. Sacred places get visited, books get read, research changes and occasionally experience refuses to fit comfortably into the explanation I expected.

That's part of the point.

If you've ever found yourself caught between scepticism and wonder, wanting evidence without losing mystery, you'll probably feel at home here.

Choose a doorway and begin.
